JOB SUMMARY The Engineering Construction Inspector is responsible for performing technical/skilled level work dealing with the engineering, construction and maintenance of various public works projects. Performs construction inspections, computer drafting and other technical work related to engineering and public works projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Performs construction inspections and assists project engineer with contract administration for water, wastewater, street and other public works projects. - Works with contractors to ensure that engineering work conforms to City standards. - Assists in the research, planning and design of various City engineering projects. - Performs field surveys and other technical work related to engineering and public works projects. - Retrieves and provides technical information to developers, engineers, utilities and citizens. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: - Construction specifications and drawings; inspection techniques; construction process. - Engineering terminology, documents, and materials. - Advanced mathematics; drafting terminology and techniques. - Methods and equipment used in the testing of construction materials. - Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), as well as basic database utilities. - Engineering drafting principles required to formulate and prepare engineering drawings, maps and plans preferred.
Ability to: - Operate field survey equipment. - Read, analyze and interpret detailed engineering data from sketches, verbal descriptions, and specifications. - Learn, independently interpret and apply basic City infrastructure policies, procedures and protocol. - Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports. - Produce detailed sketches and working plans utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) Software preferred. - Collect and correlate engineering and public works data, prepares graphs, charts and exhibits preferred. - Coordinate many different tasks and determine the relative importance of each to set deadlines and complete assigned tasks accordingly. - Quickly and effectively, reschedule and distribute work assignments to meet shifts in work priorities. - Apply sound judgment, discretion and initiative in performing daily duties with minimal direct supervision. - Establish and maintain effective working relationships with municipal officials, other employees and the general public.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience: - Minimum of four (4) years previous public works construction related work experience.
Education: - High School Diploma or GED required. - Associate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, drafting, surveying or other engineering related discipline is desirable.
Licenses / Certifications: - Valid Class “C” or higher Motor Vehicle Operators License - APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector is highly desirable.
The essential duties of this position are typically performed in the field exposing the incumbent to the commonly associated hazards of most general construction sites. Incumbents assigned to this position will be required to perform normal office work on occasion. Incumbents in this position may be required to work overtime hours including evenings and weekends as required. The duties of this position may require that the incumbent remain sitting for extended periods of time. Additionally, Incumbents assigned to this position must be physically able to lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs without assistance in the performance of their daily duties.
