The Streets Maintenance Foreman supervises and performs skilled work in the safe operation of light and heavy trucks, tractors, loaders and various other heavy equipment in support of the City’s Street Maintenance Department.


Essential Duties

  • Perform site excavation for City street maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform site excavation in order to repair, replace or install drainage culverts and/or other related drainage components.
  • Backfill and restore condition of previously excavated areas.
  • Safely operate commercial flatbed or dump body truck to transport dirt, rock, spoil and other material to and from various job sites.
  • Safely transport required heavy equipment to and from various job sites.
  • Safely operate and use various other small machinery and tools required to successfully complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge of:

  • Lead the work activities of a crew in the field; including but not limited to instructing, assigning, reviewing, planning the work of others, monitoring standards, coordinating activities and allocating personnel.
  • The safe operation and maintenance characteristics of various heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoe, loader, grader, and other related machinery and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of municipal streets.
  • Operates survey equipment such as a transit in order to determine proper grade for roadway surfaces.
  • All phases of street, alley, drainage and construction repair.
  • The safe operation and maintenance of various power saws, trimmers and mowers.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Accomplish goals using sound decision-making skills and to problem-solve issues.
  • Physically perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Safely and skillfully operate required equipment and machinery, various hand tools, power tools and other small machinery to successfully complete assigned tasks.
  • Push, pull, drag, lift and carry a minimum of 75lbs without assistance.
  • Work various shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays and on-call as required.

Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.


  • (3) to (5) years progressively responsible experience in the construction and maintenance of streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs drainage ways and drainage pipes.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.


  • High School Diploma or GED required.


  • Possession of a valid Class “B” or greater Commercial Driver’s License, with the appropriate endorsements is a requirement for continued employment and must be obtained within six month (6) after date of hire.

Environmental Factors

The duties of this position are primarily performed outdoors in a field environment where the incumbent can reasonably expect to be exposed to all weather conditions and various hazardous substances such as explosive fuels, oils and other lubricants, dust and moderately loud noise levels on a routine basis. Incumbents in this position can expect to routinely push, pull, lift and carry a minimum of 75lbs daily without assistance. Additionally, incumbents in this position should be physically able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel and reach in the performance of their daily duties. Incumbents in this position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and on an on-call basis.

This position has been classified as a “safety-sensitive” position. All incumbents assigned to a “safety-sensitive” position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Vehicle Driver’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
